Adopt-A-Roadway
The City of Mequon Adopt-a-Roadway Program provides organizations, corporations, groups, and individuals an opportunity to help keep City-maintained roadways trash free. Learn more about the requirements and how to apply below.
Program Requirements:
We ask adopters to organize cleanup events at least twice a year. In return, the City of Mequon will post recognition signs along the adopted roadway giving you or your group credit for your efforts.
Adoption Time Length:
Valid until such time the Group notifies the City of abandonment.
Length and Location:
Roadside area within the right of way. The City of Mequon will work with prospective adopters to select sites that are safe for volunteers.
Age Requirements:
An individual or an adopting group’s primary contact must be 18 years of age or older. The Group shall supply one adult supervisor for every 5 to 6 workers. Cleanup event participants must be at least 11 years of age or older to work along City roadways. Minors must have parental permission.
Cleanup Events Per Year:
A minimum of two organized, scheduled events; between April 1 and November 1 every year.
Clean-Up Event Notification:
Requested cleanup event dates must be approved by the City. Adopter will contact the Adopt-a-Roadway Coordinator at least two weeks in advance of the preferred date.
Supplies:
The following equipment is provided for pickup from Mequon Department of Public Works: Safety vests, trash bags, litter grabbers and work gloves.
Bagged Litter Pick-Up:
Mequon Highway Department will pick up bagged litter from the roadside after cleanup events.
Acknowledgment Signs:
The city will erect an Adopt-A-Roadway sponsorship sign with the group’s name on it on each end of the adopted roadway segment after the group performs at least two successful clean-ups.

Process
1. Application
- Check the map below to see what roadway sections are available.
- Complete the application form and submit it to the City of Mequon Highway Department for approval. (instructions on form)
2. Prior to clean-up
- Organize group and have volunteers watch the DOT safety video.
- Group leaders download and share with your group, the Wisconsin DOT Safety Sheet. The safety rules outlined in this sheet also applies to the City of Mequon Adopt-A-Roadway program. The contacts, however, for the Mequon program are listed on the clean-up report.
- Fill out the Adopt-A-Roadway work plan and hold harmless agreement forms and submit them to the City of Mequon Highway Department. (instructions on forms) Note: Groups may not clean up their adopted section of roadway until the hold harmless agreement (signed by every group participant) is submitted to the city.
- Arrange to pick up required safety vests, garbage bags, litter grabbers, etc. during highway department regular business hours.
3. CLEAN-UP!
- Group cleans up their “adopted” section of roadway!
- Group leaders fill out clean-up report. The clean-up report has contact information that may be needed during clean-up and provides an area for comments or recommendations.
4. After clean-up
- Each sponsor group shall submit the completed clean-up report and return the borrowed clean-up supplies.
- After two successful clean-ups, the city will erect the sponsor signs.
- Groups wishing to stop cleaning up their “adopted” segment of roadway shall complete the notice of abandonment form to make the segment available to other groups.
