Fence & Shed Permits

FENCE PERMITS

Fence permits are required in the City of Mequon no matter what the height is.  

Fences under 4.5 feet high can be located anywhere on the property except in an easement or on the property line.  Fences over 4.5 feet high must adhere to offset and setback requirements. For residential offset and setbacks please call the Zoning Department at 262-236-2908.

To obtain a fence permit, please submit the following items to the Inspections Department:

  1. Building Permit Application (see attachment)
  2. Copy of your survey showing where the fence will be located along with the distance from the fence to the lot lines marked.  If you do not have a copy of your survey, please contact the Assessor's Office at 262-236-2952 to obtain a copy.
  3. If you are located in a Homeowner's Association neighborhood, a letter of approval is needed.
  4. Fences within the setbacks that are over 4.5 fee high will require a notarized approval letter from neighboring lot(s).
  5. Zoning Form (see attachment).

 

SHED PERMITS

Sheds that are over 300 square feet will need to go to Architectural Board before a building permit can be issued.  Please see the Architectural Board information that is under the main Inspections Department page for information on how to submit your application.  Agricultural barns or pole barns in excess of 1000 square feet will need to apply to the planning commission for approval.  See Community Developments page. 

Sheds that are between 150 - 300 square feet will require design approval from Staff before a  building permit will be issued; please submit the following items to the Inspections Department:

  1. Building Permit Application (see attachment)
  2. Zoning Form (see attachment)
  3. Copy of your survey showing where the shed will be located with the distance from the shed to the lot lines marked.  If you do not have a copy of your survey, please contact the Assessor's Office at 262-236-2952 to obtain a copy
  4. A set of plans showing dimensions, design, color and material(s) being used
  5. Pictures of all house elevations and any other outbuildings located on the property
  6. Staff review fee of $135.00 is required at time of submittal

Sheds that are under 150 square feet will need a building permit; please submit the following items to the Inspections Department:

  1. Building Permit Application (see attachment)
  2. Zoning Form (see attachment)
  3. Copy of your survey showing where the shed will be located with the distance from the shed to the lot lines marked.  If you do not have a copy of your survey, please contact the Assessor's Office at 262-236-2952 to obtain a copy
  4. Sheds that are within the setbacks will will require a notarized approval letter from neighboring lot(s).
  5. A set of plans showing dimensions, design, color and material being used.
