COVID-19 Update for the Week Ending Friday, December 11
The City of Mequon, in coordination with the Washington/Ozaukee Public Health Department and other state and federal agencies, continues to monitor the spread of COVID-19.

  • As of this afternoon, the State has recorded 429,957 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 3,991  associated deaths. Of the cases in Wisconsin, 5,446 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 43 related deaths have been in Ozaukee County, based on information from the Washington/Ozaukee Public Health Department (WOPHD).
  • Washington and Ozaukee Counties have partnered with Curative, Inc. to provide free oral COVID-19 testing at Washington County Fair Park and Ozaukee County Fairgrounds. Testing will begin on Tuesday, December 15 and will be available Monday through Friday. The tests are self-administered PCR oral swabs. Results are texted or e-mailed within 48 hours. Testing will be open from 8:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and 10:00 A.M. – 6:00 P.M. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at each location. Residents will need to register ahead of time to guarantee a test and bring their insurance cards and a photo ID. Testing is free, with no out-of-pocket costs. Individuals without insurance will not be turned away. Appointments can be scheduled online through Curative's website.

Please help the City limit the spread of COVID-19 in the community by wearing a mask, maintaining social distancing, avoiding large gatherings, following proper hygiene practices and staying home when sick.

Police Department Selects Next School Resource Officer
Officer Lewis Johnson has been selected as the next School Resource Officer. The two School Resource Officers in the Department serve on a four-year rotation.  Officer Tarie Umhoefer has served the community professionally and with pride in this position for the last four years.  Thank you, Officer Umhoefer.  Officer Umhoefer's assignment will end in mid-January, at which time Officer Johnson will assume the role.  Officer Johnson applied for the position and participated in interviews with the Department's command staff and representatives from the Mequon – Thiensville School District, including the Superintendent, Dr. Matthew Joynt. After a review of the application process and interview results, Officer Johnson was ultimately selected by Police Chief Patrick Pyror.  The Department and School District are looking forward to seeing Officer Johnson in this position.

City Brush Site Sees Successful 2020 Season
After a minor delay in opening this year due to concerns for safe operation during a pandemic, the City's recycling (brush) site on Bonniwell Road was opened on Wednesday, April 15 through November 28. The site was opened for 65 days in 2020, with an average of 249 attendees each of the days of operation. Over the last three to four seasons, the recycling site has experienced an influx of debris being brought to the brush site. The popularity seems to directly correlate to the presence of Emerald Ash Borer and the need for the DPW and residents alike to remove trees that have been affected by the invasive borer.

The City contracted with Enercon from Hartford to grind the materials on-site in April, July, and December. The site generated approximately 10,000 – 12,000 yards of ground mulch material and an additional 2,000 yards of leaf compost. Of the ground mulch, 250 yards of material was utilized to mulch the Mequon Parks and an additional 200 yards of mulch was available for the resident's use. Residents were also offered the leaf compost for pickup from site, to incorporate into gardens or planting areas. The City also offers residents the chance to come to the site for logwood that may be made into firewood. If residents are interested in picking up logwood, please contact the Department of Public Works to coordinate an appointment by phone at 262- 236-2913.

Due to site capacity limitations, the remaining material will be removed from the site and recycled to make room for the upcoming season. Brush permits for the next season will be made available in March 2021.
